About the World

Rain City Circus is an atmospheric fusion of industry, nature, and machine. Set in the fictional, perpetually submerged metropolis of Rain City — a world of verdigris copper, emerald fog, and perpetual rain — the show explores the lifecycle of a city through physical risk.

Unlike traditional circus which focuses on spectacle, this is a story told through the language of danger: the precariousness of a balancing tower, the relentless momentum of a steel wheel, and the weightlessness of flight.

"Welcome to Rain City Circus, where the masks reveal the rust."

Each character represents a System State — a protocol running inside the Architect's mind. As the show climbs from the sub-levels to the summit, the system begins to fail, exposing the rust beneath the mask.

The Cast of Rain City

Four personas. One performer. Each character is a protocol that represents a system state and moral struggle within the Architect's mind.

The Impresario
Protocol: Truth

The Impresario

The Master of Ceremonies. Aristocratic and deceptive, he manipulates geometry to reveal the hollow glamour of the city.

Dekaru Goyikra
Protocol: Struggle

Dekaru Goyikra

The Soul Guide. A plague-masked figure navigating the mental weight of the sub-levels through the cycle of the wheel.

Professor Gearworth
Protocol: Resilience

Professor Gearworth

The Obsessive Builder. He imposes order on a spinning world, climbing a tower of failed inventions toward impossible height.

Awaiting Cue
Protocol: Apex — In Rehearsal

Orriven Sylthar

The Sentinel of the ruins. A graceful deer-wolf wanderer stalking the shadows, waiting to be revealed at the summit.

Fraser Copland is the sole engineer of the Rain City simulation. Blending handbalancing, aerial arts, object manipulation, and game development logic, he transforms into four distinct archetypes to explore the fractured psyche of an industrial world.

His work is rooted in narrative embodiment — using mask work, costume transformation, and UE5 environments to bridge physical risk and digital storytelling.

Acting for Circus Artists

The body telling a story is the same instrument you already master.

Most circus training focuses on what the body can do. This workshop asks a different question — who is doing it, and why?

Drawing on Laban Movement Analysis, apparatus relationship work, and character development frameworks adapted specifically for physical performance, this workshop gives circus artists a concrete toolkit for building characters that live inside their acts — not just on top of them.

What You'll Explore
  • Laban Effort and the four motion factors as a vocabulary for character physicality
  • Your relationship with your apparatus — and how that relationship drives narrative
  • Character frameworks from acting theory, adapted for the circus context
  • How to find the story that was already inside your choreography
Who It's For

Intermediate to advanced circus artists who want to deepen the narrative dimension of their work. No acting experience required — your apparatus is your instrument.

Format

Available as a half-day intensive for groups, or as a private session for individual performers. Workshops can be delivered at your studio or venue anywhere.

"The apparatus already contains the story. Your job is to notice what was already there."
